An unusual caned plant, where the canes appear to climb up with each new growth. Best grown on a sock like mount filled with a well drained media, that will allow the roots anchorage. The spikes are quite tall, erect, multiflowered and tend to branch. Maximum sunlight and a dry rest in winter when leaves fall are needed. When new growths appear, lots of water and fertiliser will produce large robust canes. Barkeria whartoniana is a rare species from Mexico, it appears to be adaptable to most climates, especially as it is dormant during thw cold winter.
