A basket culture species, so that the pendulous spikes can grow thu the side or bottom of the basket. Stanhopeas seem to grow readily in a variety of medias, provided the media will stay damp but not soggy wet. Provided the plants are well fed, they will take a fairly sunny position, and when in new growth, lots of water anf fertiliser will develop large plants. Stanhopea nigroviolacea is an intermediate to warm grower from Mexico. The flowers are huge and spectacular, closely related to Stanhopea tigrina. Photo Tony Wilson
